- Abstract
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known by the acronym PCOS, is an endocrine disorder that causes metabolic and reproductive changes in women of childbearing age, its manifestations are characterized by irregular menstruation, high production of the male hormone (testosterone) and the presence of cysts in the ovaries., hirsutism, alopecia, acne, amenorrhea and excess facial and body hair. The etiology of the disease is still not fully understood, being able to be implicated by a genetic origin and a possible link between the disease and resistance to the action of insulin in the body. In addition, studies indicate that the symptoms presented by the disorder can compromise the psychological and social quality of women. This study aims to evaluate, through the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), women with PCOS and their perceptions of body self-image. Women diagnosed with PCOS and women with a regular menstrual cycle were assessed using the questionnaire, aged between 18 and 49 years. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t test. Women with the syndrome showed 70% body dissatisfaction, while control women showed only 15% body discomfort.
