- Abstract
The article highlights the need of diagnostic and therapeutic competence in geriatric dentistry. The nutritional status of geriatric patients can directly affect their ability to withstand trauma, to heal, and to respond to dental procedures. Mental and physical disability are also related to poor nutrition in the elderly. Root canal therapy for older patients is often very different than for younger adults. There is very low margin of error Penodontal procedures are basically the same for older patients, but there is far less margin for error. Management of missing teeth in the elderly often requires some type of denture service because of compromising factors such as periodontal health, tolerance to dental procedures, systemic health, and ability to pay.
