- Abstract
The article focuses on the problems, particularly attrition and bone resorption, to be considered by clinicians who treat adults in responding to the increasing longevity of patients. It discusses the long-term effect on remaining teeth and supporting bone when teeth are extracted. Attrition, erosion and abrasion are collectively known as tooth surface loss or tooth surface wear. It mentions several causes of tooth surface wear including dietary erosion and abrasion. Teeth extraction helps analyze pattern of bone resorption of patients. It concludes that problems of practitioners increase significantly with increase in number of people entering old age in the dentate state. It recommends practitioners to recommend the needs of the patient over the long term rather than the short term.
