- Title
THE OPTIMAL TIME TO DECOMMISSION COMMERCIAL NUCLEAR REACTORS.
- Authors
Rothwell, Geoffrey S.
- Abstract
The article discusses a discounted cost model on the optimal timing between the closure and the decommissioning of nuclear reactors in the U.S. It cites the factors that encourage companies to make rapid decommissioning of such reactors including the reduction in the permitted levels of radiation exposure and the rise in the cost of waste burial. The author emphasizes the need for legislators to evaluate the costs and advantages of decreased radiation exposure and studies on waste burial technology, as nuclear reactors close.
