The article discusses ways in which narrative constructions of identity produce racial identity in the 20th and 21st centuries. Topics covered include an exploration of the narrative of the shooting of unarmed African American teenager Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, in relation to the works of African American writer Richard Wright, and situating Brown as a 21st century reality of Wright's fictional character Bigger Thomas.
