- Authors
Ephlin, Donald F.
- Abstract
This article offers a look at the development of the relationship between General Motors Corp. (GM) and the United Automobile Workers Union (UAW). The author traces the history of the relationship between the two since UAW negotiated its first labor contract with GM in the mid-1930s. The author provides details on the strikes of workers at GM in the winter of 1936-1937 and discusses how GM eventually responded to the concerns of the workers. The author examines the terms of the agreement and discusses some of the improvements that have been made more recently such as job and income security, greater employee input in decision making and advances in workplace health and safety.
