- Abstract
Juan Pérez de Menacho (1565-1626), a Jesuit philosopher and theologian born in Lima, opened the scholastic tradition in the Viceroyalty of Peru. A lecturer of Theology at San Marcos University, this figure is legendary, his fame even increasing after the manuscripts of his works were thought to be lost during a fire in the National Library of Peru in 1943. He was considered one of the most brilliant minds in his era, but at the same time he was largely unknown or even mystified. This biobibliographical essay discusses the scarce but polemical readings of his work and the fate of his writings - which are not entirely lost, as we will see. Finally, based on a little-known Baroque biography, the life and trajectory of Pérez de Menacho as a symbol of scholasticism in early Hispanic America will be reconstructed.
