- Abstract
Oxidative stress plays an important role in aging. Effects of several antioxidants on age- related oxidative stress have been investigated. Some investigators reported that oxidative stress is also associated with the structural and functional changes in testes during aging. Carnosine(CAR) is a dipeptide having antioxidant actions. The combination of CAR with vitamin E (CAR+ E) increases its antioxidant efficiency. We investigated the effects of CAR+ E treatments on age-related oxidative stress in testicular tissue of aged rats. In our study, young (5 months) and aged (22 months) Wistar rats were used. CAR (250 mg/kg; i.p.; 5 days per week) and vitamin E (200 mg/kg; i.m.; twice per week) were given for two months. Malondialdehyde (MDA), diene conjugate (DC), glutathione (GSH), vitamin E and vitamin C levels and catalase, superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and glutathione transferase(GST) activities were determined. MDA, DC levels and SOD activities increased. Although GSH levels were not altered, GSH-Px and GST levels were detected to decrease in testes of aged rats. CAR+ E treatment decreased MDA and DC levels. There were no changes in GSH levels and SOD activities. Both GSH-Px and GST activities were increased by CAR+ E vit treatment in testis tissue of aged rats. These results suggest that CAR+ E treatment seems to be useful to decrease oxidative stress in testicular tissues of aged rats.
