- Abstract
A commentary on a study which investigated how the characteristics of the gut microbiota upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission may predict death or subsequent infection in critically ill patients, is presented. Topics covered include methods of investigating the composition of enteric bacteria based on nucleic acid sequencing, background of intestinal dysbiosis and finding that the diversity and richness of the gut microbiota at admission were not predictive of death or infection.
