Presents an interview with Barbara Ellen Smith, who served as the Director of the Women's Studies Program and the Director of the Center for Research on Women at the University of Memphis, Tennessee. She talks about the factors in her personal life that influenced her professional life, the description of her role in black lung activism and her relationship with the Black Lung Association and the factors that facilitated the change in the focus of her scholarship from coal and labor to women and gender issues.
