An essay is presented on the sociological theories and research of sociologist Erving Goffman and the role of technology in human interaction. The author reflects on Goffman's research on situated activity systems and how it relates to human interactions online and social aspects of the Internet. Other topics include the performativity of friendship, everyday technologies, and the fragility of social life.
