- Abstract
The article examines the genetic component of type 1 diabetes using genowide association studies (GWAS). Type 1 diabetes is described as a complex disease resulting from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Its geographical prevalence has been established. The usage of GWAS has resulted in the discovery and the increase of locations associated with the disease and its genetic underpinnings. It is suggested that further studies into genetic signals can lead to improvements in the diagnosis, prevention and cure of the disease.
