- Abstract
Inhibition of phloem transport caused by chilling has been studied by measurement of temporal tracer profiles observed both uptstream and downstream of the chilled region. The dynamics of the profile changes indicate that blockage is immediate but does not cause flow along the pathway to cease for some considerable time (50–100 min). This behaviour is anticipated for a pressure driven mass flow system. These findings demonstrate the caution needed in interpretation of sink accumulation rates.
