- Abstract
The article discusses a study which compared the mortality of hospital patients with Influenza A (H1N1)-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) referred to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers with patients having the same condition but were not referred for ECMO in Great Britain. The ECMO-referred patients in the study were those referred, accepted and transferred to an ECMO center during the H1N1 pandemic in winter 2009-2010. Three statistical approaches, namely, individual matching, propensity scorematching and GenMatch matching were used to perform matched cohort analyses. Referral and transfer to an ECMO center was found to be linked with reduced hospital mortality in patients with H1N1-related ARDS.
