- Abstract
Malatya is located in the Upper Euphrates Basin of Eastern Anatolia Region. It is surrounded by Adıyaman, Elazığ and Sivas Provinces. Malatya reaches to Meditarrenean with Sultan Suyu and Sürgü River, reaches to Central Anatolia with Tohma valley and reaches to Eastern Anatolia with Fırat valley. Malatya is a province with 14 districts, 53 municipalities and 496 villages including the central district. Malatya is above the average of Turkey in terms of population and territorial integrity. With an area of 12,146 km2, Malatya corresponds to 1.5% of Turkey. According to the 2018 census results of Malatya, it has a population of over 765 thousand. 42.2% of this population is under 25 years of age. The population between the ages of 25-65 constitutes 49.2% of the total population and the population aged 65 and over constitutes 8.5% of the total population. Due to the fertile plains of Malatya and the development of industry according to the surrounding provinces, it receives continuous migration from Elazığ, Adıyaman, Muş and Bingöl Provinces. However, when the net migration rate for 2012-2013 is considered, Malatya is among the provinces that give migration with a value of - 09.55%. Migrations from Malatya to the outside are mainly from the Aegean and Marmara Regions. Malatya's economy is based on agriculture, agricultural industry and animal husbandry. 60-70% of the active population is engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing and apricot production. Cattle, ovine and poultry farming are the leading livestock activities. In recent years, thanks to the incentive measures implemented by the state to support the livestock sector, the livestock sector is developing and gaining importance every passing day. The aim of this study is to reveal information about animal husbandry activities in Malatya. Based on these data, it is aimed to determine what should be done about Malatya today and in the future and to evaluate the Malatya Livestock Sector in terms of its impact on development and industrialization.
