- Abstract
This article presents information related to atrial fibrillation. The first description of probable atrial fibrillation was made in animals by William Harvey over 300 years ago. It is the most common sustained arrhythmia, increasing progressively in prevalence with advancing age, and occurring in 2% to 4% of the population over 60. One of the principal problems in developing strategies for management of atrial fibrillation is its diverse clinical presentation. A 75-year-old who develops atrial fibrillation associated with natural aging of the atrium is surely different from the uncommon 40-year-old fit patient who develops atrial fibrillation associated with bradycardia. Drug treatment may not always be beneficial in these cases, and the benefits of treating should always be evaluated to assure that they outweigh the risks of not treating.
