- Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the perception of participants of the extension course, “Medicinal plants in health care”, about the applicability of medicinal plants in their work activities. This was qualitative research conducted with 36 participants from 10 cities in southern Rio Grande do Sul. Data was collected during the year 2013, through self-applied semi-structured interviews. Participants affirmed the need for professional training on medicinal plants and indicated that the knowledge acquired in the course is being used in their daily work. They emphasize that to deploy a municipal policy on medicinal plants, there is essential need for professional training, support of colleagues and community, as well as building partnerships with other services and institutions. Therefore, there is evident need to rethink the training and qualification of health professionals so they can understand the population's demand regarding care with medicinal plants.
