- Abstract
Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein found in bovine and human milk that has multiple functions and applications. It has antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Lactoferrin is considered safe and is classified as a dietary supplement. Recent research has focused on lactoferrin's ability to protect against DNA damage, defend against intestinal immune barrier damage, and potentially act as an adjuvant therapy for COVID-19. The iron saturation of lactoferrin plays a role in its biological effects, and it has shown promise in the treatment of myopia. This article highlights the potential applications of lactoferrin as an alternative or complement to standard therapy.
