- Abstract
The article discusses research concerning the Tribe of Ishmael, a family of poor people from Indianapolis, Indiana. The author talks about the diary of Reverend Oscar C. McCulloch, an advocate of the organized charities movement and the supposed first man to encounter the tribe and mention them publicly. The causes of the Ishmael's poverty are addressed. The author states that historian James Frank Wright outlined much of the popular beliefs concerning the Ishmaels. The fictional accounts written by Wright are addressed. The article also discusses a study of the Ishmaels conducted by fieldworker Arthur H. Estabrook.
