- Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate if mouth breathers become nose breathers after adenoidectomy, if the size of adenoids become normalized after adenoidectomy, how permanent the result of this operation is and how nasal airflow is affected by adenoidectomy. The children were divided into two groups, the 80 who underwent adenoidectomy and 80 controls. The results show that 1 year after adenoidectomy, the incidence of mouth breathing had fallen from 90 to 20%. After adenoidectomy the size of adenoids appear to normalize during the first postoperative year. In most cases the result of the operation was permanent. The improvement in nasal airflow in conjunction with adenoidectomy persisted during the first postoperative year. Copyright © 1973 S. Karger AG, Basel
