- Abstract
The study of the Roman villa maritima and the archaeological site of Cape Trafalgar, the former Promontorium Iunonis (Barbate, Cadiz), has recently been taken up again, with the aim of characterizing its aquaculture pond, unique to date in Baetica. A preview of the March 2021 campaign is presented in this paper, which has produced multiple novelties: we focus on the study of the so-called Eastern Shell midden, some of whose malacological remains may correspond to the species farmed in these facilities: oysters (Ostrea edulis) and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). The fish pond has also been documented in detail, making progress in its definition and its possible compartmentalized nature (so called piscina loculata). The identification of vats for the production of garum and salted fish has also been relevant, which allows confirming the coexistence of aquaculture and fish preserves manufacture in this unique site on the coast of the conventus Gaditanus.
