- Abstract
This article seeks to reveal what influence the children and adults acting in folklore groups have on the cultural life of several Samogitian towns and villages. It also analyses the conditions under which the activities of urban and rural folklore groups take place and the ways of ethno-cultural heritage actualisation. The main subjects of the survey were children folklore groups of Mažeikiai and Plungė districts of Samogitia interviewed in 2010: four groups were from Mažeikiai city and district and one was the children folklore group of Plungė city (the survey covered 50 respondents in total). For the comparative analysis adult folklore groups of these two districts (76 respondents) were surveyed. The field survey involved the methods of questionnaires, monitoring and semi-structured interviews. The obtained data were analysed by means of comparative method. It has been established that the activities of Plungė and Mažeikiai folklore groups have no substantial influence on the local cultural life. These activities are needed rather by the folklore group participants themselves. Members of these tiny ethno-musical communities perceive them as self-expression, communication and a way to spend their leisure time. And on the contrary, for the people of small Samogitian towns Seda and Plateliai and surrounding villages the Cultural Centre of Seda, the National Park of Samogitia and folklore groups representing them serve as the axis turning the entire cultural life. The survey has revealed the differences of rehearsal conditions experienced by the folklore groups acting in schools and cultural centres. School folklore groups rehearse in small unequipped classrooms, whereas in the cultural centres rehearsals are usually performed in the concert halls. Folklore group participants coming from rural areas often face with transport problems which complicate the activities of the folklore groups. Due to rather long distances, without a vehicle children and elder people become almost isolated. Meanwhile in urban areas both adult and children folklore groups find it much easier to gather for rehearsal and concerts. Within the activities of children folklore groups, the actualisation of tradition is performed manly in two ways. The first one is helping children to realise direct interconnection between generations, native land and cultural heritage. The second way is tying ethno-cultural heritage to time, integrating seasonal holidays, traditional cuisine and family celebrations with folk songs and dances. Folklore groups of Mažeikiai city often go to celebrate Mardi Gras and St. John's Feast to the countryside -traditional environment for the seasonal holidays, because in the cities celebration of seasonal holidays is rather fragmentary - down-graded and adapted for the urban folk. Meanwhile, in the towns of Seda and Plateliai and nearby villages - thus, in the traditional environment-ethnical music, choreography, cuisine heritage and folk arts are maintained efficiently and actively with pro-active involvement of the folklore groups.
