- Abstract
This article, published in the National Science Review, explores the field of non-linear optics and the search for the perfect non-linear optical material. Non-linear optical materials have the unique ability to manipulate and control light in ways that linear materials cannot, making them important for various devices and applications. The article discusses the challenges in combining non-linear optical materials with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor electronics and the underdevelopment of non-linear optical materials in the terahertz domain. The authors present a new approach to achieving effective non-linear responses through non-linear Thomson scattering, demonstrating a fundamentally new regime of non-linear responses in integrated terahertz systems. This research offers a new route to developing novel light sources in the terahertz spectral range and beyond.
