- Authors
LAREQUI FONTANEDA, Javier
- Abstract
The article is a review of a book that analyzes the reception of the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum in Europe and America. The book features 18 contributions from 20 authors and is part of the RIPOMPHEI project in Digital Humanities. It is divided into five parts that address different aspects of the reception of these archaeological sites, including their influence on art, the press, and culture in general. It highlights how European artists were inspired by the excavations to depict antiquity in their works, while in Spain and Mexico, a connection was established between classical and local cultures. It also mentions the impact of the excavations on architecture, gardens, and decoration in Mexico, as well as their reception in archives and studies using Digital Humanities tools. Overall, it emphasizes how these discoveries contributed to constructing an idea of progress associated with Antiquity and generated a democratization of the ancient world in different societies.
