- Abstract
The article presents the study conducted on the acute oral perniciousness of colchicine (COL) in male and female rats in the U.S. This research evaluates the comparative effects of a simple versus a complex vehicle matrix, gender and pretreatment of animals with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), on COL toxicity. It notes that colchicine is a tropolene alkaloid extracted from the plant Colchicum autumnale, a member of the lily family such as meadow saffron, autumn crocus and gloriosa superba tuber. The entire plant is poisonous specially its bulb because it contains the highest concentration of the toxic chemical which is used in the treatment of human diseases including cancer, due to its anti-mitotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties.
