- Abstract
The article discusses the simple theater recitative. It is indicated by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that most opera recitative would be better spoken. The melodic and harmonic dullness of simple recitative in the Italian singing is intentional because it is constructed to mirror speech patterns. In today's theatrical productions, simple recitative does approach the nonsustained manner. The simple recitative is developed more about acting than singing to achieve its proper effect. In the modern music editions, appoggiatura in simple recitative creates harmonic error further indicates that major composers expected their notation to be performed as written.
