- Abstract
The article focuses on role of echocardiography screening as a useful tool in detecting people with rheumatic heart disease. The disease is one of the public health burdens throughout the developing world causing over 200,000 deaths annually. This results from the cumulative damage from recurrent episodes of acute rheumatic fever. Through echocardiography, it was found that after a first episode of carditis, cardiac auscultation becomes common in one-third of children. The early detection of rheumatic valve disease is vital as it offers an opportunity for case detection. While echocardiography has been proven a useful tool, the cost-effectiveness of such tool should be studied.
