- Abstract
This article discusses the first successful case of heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation using a discarded liver with intrahepatic bile duct stones. The patient, a 54-year-old male with severe cirrhosis, was on the liver transplantation waiting list and required emergent liver transplantation. A 24-year-old female with intrahepatic bile duct stones volunteered to donate her resected right lobe, which would have otherwise been discarded. The surgical procedure involved the removal of stones and the reconstruction of hepatic veins and biliary ducts. Both the donor and recipient had uncomplicated postoperative recoveries. The study suggests that discarded livers with intrahepatic bile duct stones can be utilized as auxiliary transplanted livers for patients with portal hypertension in need of emergent liver transplantation.
