- Abstract
With the objective to determine the effects of the organic fertilization (0, 100, 300 and 500 kg N/ha/year), the variety (Cubana, Indonesia, Tigreada and Acorazonada) and the season (rainy and little rainy period) in the esteroidal saponins (SE) contents of mullberry, a research was carried out using a randomized block design with 4 x 4 x 2 factorial arrangement (n=5). Significant interactions of any order between the factors were not observed (P<0,05) and, as much in the leaves as in the stems, the fertilization levels did not affect the concentrations significantly. The variety Acorazonada showed the maximum content in the leaves (11,57a mg/gDM) whereas Indonesia, Cubana and Tigreada showed lower levels (11,00ab; 10,65b and 9,30c mg/gDM, respectively). The greater concentration in the leaves were observed in rainy period (14,38 mg/gDM); whereas in the fresh stems the highest level corresponded with the little rainy period (2.52 mg/ gDM). The results allow concluding that, between the factors evaluated in the leaves, the season and the variety showed the greater importance. In fresh stems the season factor caused noticeable variations. In both parts of the plant, the fertilization levels did not produce effect in SE concentrations.
