- Title
Publishing the Word: Robert Southwell’s Sacred Poetry.
- Authors
Miola, Robert S.
- Abstract
Though Robert Southwell suffered the death of a traitor (hanging, drawing and quartering) at Tyburn on 21 February 1595, his verse lived on, achieving a popularity unmatched by that of any other contemporary Catholic poet. The early modern manuscript and print publications of Robert Southwell clearly show that his poetry took on different shapes to express different meanings to different reading communities. Appropriated and received variously by private circles and public audiences, by Catholics, Protestants and even Puritans, the sacred poetry of Robert Southwell became a contested site of religious identity and difference. Its manuscript and print history constitutes a revealing series of case studies in early modern writing, editing, publication and reading. Furthermore, this history illuminates the various economic and religious forces that variously construct the author in and outside his work.
