- Abstract
Leukocytes play a major role in reperfusion injury mediated tissue damage. The mechanisms by which leukocytes especially neutrophils are recruited to the graft, are not known, but are likely to involve endothelial activation resulting in enhanced adhesion and transendothelial migration. The recent development of anti-integrin peptides from the filamentus haemagglutinin of B pertussis that bind to and block Mac-1 suggests a novel way of inhibiting leukocytes recruitment into the tissue. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of such peptides in preventing reperfusion injury in a rat model of aortic transplantation.
