- Abstract
Aim: This study aims to determine the effects of exercise on the quality of life and physiological parameters of obese nursing students. Methods: The study used a pretest-posttest and quasi-experimental design. It was conducted March-May 2012 and November 2012-January 2013. The study sample comprised nursing 18 obese students with a Body Mass Index=25 kg / m2 after screening a total of 583 students. An exercise program was continued for about 3 months (12 weeks), three days a week and 45 minutes (16:00-17:00) per day. Evaluation of the data was used by arithmetic mean, Wilcoxon signedrank test and Spearman's rank correlation analysis. Results: After the exercise program, statistically significant reductions were shown in students' weight, plasma glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, and systolic blood pressure (p<0.05); however, no statistically significant reductions were shown in Body Mass Index and diastolic blood pressure (p>0.05). Additionally, the students' level of activity (p=0.01) and all the subscales of quality of life increased significantly (p=0.000). Conclusion: In conclusion, it is thought that the development of exercise habits will set an example for raising nursing students' professional awareness of overweight and obese individuals in the development community health.
