- Abstract
Hunting and wildlife trade in Colombia is a problem of extensive proportions, mainly because the magnitude at which it´s shown within the national territory, being ranked as the third more profi table illegal business in the country after drug traffi cking and the illegal weapons sale. This situation leads the local people of rural and urban areas to use the wildlife as a subsistence method. Also the capacity of the institutions responsible for protecting these resources is inadequate, being scarce the analysis at the species level and the projects and approaches to improve this situation, showing the priority needs to adopt several conservation strategies to generate preventive and corrective measures both in situ and ex situ sceneries. We made the technical advice and monitored the fi rst seizure of a jaguar (Panthera onca) in Puerto Carreño, documenting each of the variables to be taken into the development of this kind of procedure, setting a precedent on this issue and the fi rst exercise involving: seizure, veterinary medical evaluation, establishment of habitat and management of semi-captivity conditions; all information that allow the evaluation of the possible reintroduction of the animal, generating bases for solid and clear maintenance programs to the reintroduction of this wildlife species.
