- Abstract
A generic drug for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis, a fatal tropical disease, was found to contain no active pharmaceutical ingredient in Bangladesh. This poor-quality drug not only poses a threat to the vulnerable patients using it, but also has a negative impact on public health and elimination programs targeting the disease. The case highlights the need for national drug regulators to ensure that drugs for neglected tropical diseases adhere to international standards for quality and safety. It also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the quality of anti-infective medicines in resource-poor countries and developing methods to assess drug quality.
