- Abstract
This article discusses the challenges of translating pre-clinical studies on cardioprotection to patient benefit in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) cases. The study by Vilahur et al. in the European Heart Journal addresses these challenges by using a pig model of AMI and assessing various endpoints through MRI. The study explores the potential of ticagrelor and recombinant CD39L3 as cardioprotective interventions. The article suggests improvements for future studies, such as using adult pigs, both male and female, longer observation periods, and pigs with genetic susceptibility to metabolic syndrome. The authors emphasize the importance of pre-clinical studies and clinical trials to advance cardioprotection research. The study was supported by the German Research Foundation and the European COST ACTION.
