The article focuses on the debate between Maria Todorova and Holm Sundhaussen regarding the conceptualization of the Balkans, exploring how this controversy has influenced Southeast European studies. Topics discussed include the construction of the Balkans as 'the Other,' challenges faced by female academics in a male-dominated field, and the epistemological shifts in Southeast European studies, drawing from postcolonial debates and historical contextualization and discusses gender biases in academia.
