- Abstract
In I Nostalgia imperial i , Salles described Brazilian society's "nostalgic sentiment" for the monarchy, which he traced to, among other things, the hierarchies and exclusions created by slavery that, even today, continue to affect Brazil. After the publication of the book, the concept of second slavery started to be widely used in articles, symposiums, and books that Salles wrote, organized, and edited. In 1997, Salles was accepted into the Graduate Program at the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), where he obtained an MA (1999) and a PhD (2001), under the direction of Ilmar de Mattos, a specialist in the Brazilian Empire and, like Salles, a reader of Gramsci.
