- Abstract
Objective: Studies on the frequency of carbonmonoxide (CO) poisoning in children are rare. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the CO poisoning cases arriving at Ankara Children's Hematology Oncology Training and Research Hospital. Material and Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of CO poisoning who had presented at Ankara Children's Hematology Oncology Training and Research Hospital between the dates of 03.01.2006 and 21.01.2014 were searched retrospectively. The age, sex and hospitalization rate of the patients, departments where the patients were treated, and seasonal and monthly distributions were evaluated. Results: A total of 394.387 patients presented at the emergency clinic during the study period and 1756 cases (0.4%, age range 0-18 years) were diagnosed as CO poisoning. The percentage of female patients was 51.5% (n=905) and the mean age was 8.14 ± 4.86 years. The hospitalization rate was 25.6% (n=449) with 74.4% (n=1307) treated in the outpatient emergency clinic and 0.4% (n=7) requiring intensive care therapy. Poisoning cases occurred mostly in the winter (59.5%) and especially in January (22.9%).. Conclusion: Carbonmonoxide poisoning is a common type of poisoning in children especially during the winter months in our country. The measures taken to prevent this problem are extremely important.
