- Title
Scientific diving in Antarctica: history and current practice.
- Authors
Pollock, Neal W.
- Abstract
The article presents a review of developments in scientific diving in Antarctica. The first recorded event was a surface-supplied dive in Antarctica in April 1902 during a German expedition. Thermal protection in polar diving is affected by the high thermal capacity of water and practical limits to the bulk of thermal-protection equipment that can be worn while maintaining adequate mobility. The diver must consider the physiological effects of hyperbaric exposure on thermal stress.
