- Abstract
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in the elderly population (over 55 years) in the developed countries. The degenerative changes involve the macular region and appear as a large variety of lesions, including non-exudative and exudative patterns. Although considered initially as distinctive aspects of the disease, most lesions suffer a gradual progression and are in fact different stages of the disease. FA (fluorescein angiography) plays a key role in the diagnostic and follow-up process in AMD, providing the base for its classification and identifying lesions with a well-recognized prognostic value. It helps detecting specific forms of AMD which present a more agressive natural history and require modification of the therapeutic approach.
