- Abstract
Introduction. Self-assessment of voice by dysphonic patients constitutes a part of a comprehensive procedure for assessment of voice disorders. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of self-assessment Voice Handicap Index (VHI) in patients with vocal fold paralysis. Materials and methods. The subjective assessment of voice by VHI was performed in 25 patients with vocal fold paralysis and in 65 healthy individuals with normal larynx function. The assessment comprised determination of total VHI and the results for VHI functional, emotional and physical subscales. The total VHI score of 0-30 was assumed to represent slight, 31-60 moderate, and 61-120 severe voice disability. Results. The results of total (VHI) score and each of its subscales were significantly poorer in the study than in the control group. A considerable proportion (68%) of subjects with vocal fold paralysis-related dysphonia reported moderate voice disability; severe voice disability was reported by as much as 24% of the subjects. No statistically significant differences were noted-in VHI results between the patients with single- and double-side vocal fold paralysis. All individuals in the control group evaluated their voice problems as slight, and their results were within the lowest level of VHI scores. Conclusions. This study confirms that VHI is a valuable tool of dysphonia self-assessment in patients with vocal folds paralysis.
