- Abstract
The gastrostomy is an important part of palliative, as well as a curative treatment plan for advanced cases of head and neck cancer. The correct balance of energetic food supply and avoiding of catabolism, which is mainly due to malnutrition caused by obstruction of upper part of digestive tract, should be the goal in complex care of patients with advanced head and neck cancer. Based on literature review and authors' own experience, the problem of malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer is discussed. The methods of food supply omitting the upper part of digestive tract are presented, and current views on the role of gastrostomy in the treatment of patients with advanced head and neck cancer are discussed.
