- Abstract
The article examines how cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier testing should be offered if a population-based CF carrier screening program is initiated in Australia. Testing may be undergone to determine whether an individual is a carrier of a cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutation. For parents who are carriers, there is a 1-in-4 chance of each pregnancy being affected by CF. The three models of a screening program include prenatal carrier screening, preconception carrier screening and carrier screening outside the clinic.
