- Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is a disease with high morbidity and mortality, and its incidence will increase over the years. That is why new professional profiles are needed to be implemented, such as the Case Management Nurse or better known as Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN), which constitutes a key element in the care of cancer patients. This profile offers a holistic vision across the complexity of the health care system, throughout the different phases of the cancer care continuum. Aim: To know the role of the Oncology Nurse Navigator in the oncology care setting. Method: A bibliographic search was carried out in databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cuiden ...) as well as in official web pages related to cancer. Inclusion limits: publications of the last 10-15 years (2006-2021), in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Relevant information was grouped into categories that met our objectives. Results: A total of 21 publications were chosen to fulfill our objectives. The narrative results show the complexity of the ONN role, in terms of competencies as well as the scope of action and interventions. In addition, the positive results obtained from the ONN intervention are numerous. In Navarra, this figure is present within the multidisciplinary cancer care units and continues to be developed. Conclusions: Research and development of the ONN profile should be promoted at the national context and be projected to the community, as it is present mainly in the hospital environment. Also, there is a gap in the survivor's care, which is considered a challenge of the cancer care continuum, that could be faced by Primary Healthare. In Navarre, as an example at the national context, this figure is present within the Multidisciplinary Functional Units for cancer care and continues to be developed.
