- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Aviators are exposed to fl ight stresses in addition to daily life stress. We aimed to investigate cardiovascular risk categories according to these risk factors among pilots operating different type of aircrafts. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The medical records of 160 aviators (age ranging from 30 to 47) who applied to the our cardiology clinic for periodical medical examination for the last 1 month were included in this study. They were divided into 3 groups: Group 1: jet pilots (n= 34), Group 2: transport/ helicopter pilots (n=81) and group 3: non-pilot aircrew (n=45). RESULTS: The mean age:36,74±3,77; 36,75±4,16; 36,11±4,35 (p=0,469), fasting blood glucose: 93,26±8,78; 93,25±10,79; 93,36±7,52 (p=0,892), systolic blood pressure: 115,88±13,05; 116,98±17,24; 113,33±14,77 (p=0,392), diastolic blood pressure: 76,76±8,78; 74,57±10,85; 74,44±9,67 (p=0,432), totally cholesterol; 220,74±37,60; 208,93±38,4; 210,82±51,91 (p=0,244), HDL cholesterol: 46,22±11,33; 47,67±9,61; 49,56±9,6 (p=0,141), LDL cholesterol: 143,18±40,47; 133,6±36,03; 135,51±46,99 (p=0,421). Application of the New ACC/AHA Risk Calculator estimated 10 year risk of CVD for groups 1,81±2,01; 1,50±1,39; 1,54±1,82 (p=0,688) respectively. The rate of smoker, systolic hypertension(>140 mmHg), diabetes mellitus, premature familial heart disease, history of familial stroke and estimated 10 year risk of CVD (greater than 3) were 23,8%; 12,5%; 2,5%; 2,5%; 1,9% and 11,8%; respectively. The smoking rate was higher in Group 3 and estimated 10 year risk of CVD was higher in Group 1. CONCLUSION:As a result, aviators are exposed to fl ight stresses in addition to daily life stress. In our study, we investigated the effectiveness of fl ight stresses caused by different aircrafts (high or low performance) on CVD risk.
