- Abstract
Introduction: Control of fungal infections on prosthetic surfaces usually requires disinfection with chemical solutions. Among them, chlorhexidine (CHX) has been highly indicated. Recent dental studies have observed the risk of CHX degradation in para-chloroaniline (PCA) during root canal disinfection, but this degradation after prosthetic disinfection has not been studied. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of PCA after CHX disinfection. Material and methods: Twelve acrylic resin discs were divided into four groups (n = 3): G1: control (distilled water); G2: 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate; G3: 2% chlorhexidine gluconate; and G4: 4% chlorhexidine gluconate. The disks were immersed for 10 min in the solutions and then stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 h. The solution suffered liquid phase extraction and was subjected to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) by SCAN and SIM methods. Results: By SCAN method, it was detected the formation of PCA in G3 and G4 (one sample in each group). At all others, it was not detected PCA formation. By SIM method, every group, except control, showed PCA formation. By a calibration curve, it was detected a 0,94 Pearson's coefficient relating the CHX concentration to the PCA concentration. Conclusion: PCA is formed as a by-product after disinfection with chlorhexidine gluconate.
