- Abstract
This article focuses on various kinds of voltage-grated ion channels' role in several cellular responses to hypoxia. Oxygen is required for the survival of all higher life forms due to its role in mitochondrial respiration permitting ATP synthesis of steroid hormones or the generation of reactive oxygen species in the macrophage defense response. Despite the paramount importance of the physiologic functions regulated by oxygen tension the molecular and cellular processes underlying the oxygen-dependent control system are largely unknown.
