- Title
"IF HIS COMPARE WITH MINE": RE-THINKING SACRED PARODY IN LIGHT OF ROBERT SOUTHWELL'S VERSION OF EDWARD DYER'S "FANCY".
- Authors
Bouchard, Gary M.
- Abstract
The article questions the term "sacred parody" used to describe the poetic endeavors of Robert Southwell and English poets who imitated his style. It examines Southwell's re-writing of Edward Dyer's poem "Fancy" into a religious repentance-themed poem; suggesting that the term "sacred parody" is inadequate for describing Southwell's literary reformation project; and the alterations made by Southwell in his poems, considering a different form of poetic transformation.
