- Abstract
This article is an editorial discussing the role of neurosonology in stroke medicine and neurocritical care. Neurosonology, specifically the transcranial color sonography technique (TCCS), plays a crucial role in understanding cerebrovascular diseases and providing real-time insights for patient outcomes. TCCS allows for high-resolution imaging of deep brain structures and the circle of Willis in the majority of subjects. It also has the potential to study the intracranial microcirculation and neovascularization of atheromatous plaques. Neurosonology offers a patient-centered approach by providing non-invasive assessments that minimize the burden on patients while maximizing information for healthcare providers. The article discusses the application of neurosonology in stroke prevention, acute stroke diagnosis, early management, and intensive care medicine. It highlights the ability of neurosonology to assess blood flow velocity, detect stenosis, monitor collateral circulation, and predict high-risk features in stroke patients. Additionally, it discusses the use of neurosonology in evaluating the hemodynamic consequences of vasospasm, assessing collateral flow, and predicting potential recurrence damage in critical illnesses such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and post-anoxic encephalopathy. The article also presents studies on the prediction and prognostication of patients in the neurointensive care unit using neurosonology. Overall, the integration of neurosonology into routine practice has the potential to elevate the standard of care for patients with cerebrovascular
