- Abstract
Objective: Vitamin D is an important factor for the metabolism of bone and neuromuscular functions. Additionally, deficiency and insufficiency of Vitamin D have been associated with many chronic diseases including cardiovascular, infectious and autoimmune diseases and metabolic syndrome in recent years. This study was aimed to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of rural people about the deficiency and insufficiency of Vitamin D. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire which includes 8 items was applied to evaluate awareness and knowledge of Vitamin D among rural people. 459 (%64,4) women and 254 (%35,6) men, total of 713 people was participated in this study. Awareness and knowledge about Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency of participants were compared according to gender, range of age and education levels. Results: 241 (%52,5) women and 100 (%39,4) men, total of 341(%47,8) people had information about Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. There was a statistically significant difference in terms of gender about awareness and knowledge (p=0,001). Statistically significant differences was also found between groups in terms of age (p<0,001) and educational levels (p<0,001). Conclusion: Vitamin D awareness in rural areas is less than 50%. Additionally gender, age, level of education are factors that affect the awareness and knowledge.
